Ovarian cysts are very common. Each month a woman’s ovary produces a follicle with a developing egg. It is normal that after a woman ovulates, the follicle re-seals and accumulates fluid forming a cyst. Ovarian cysts can be normal or abnormal, your physician at Virginia Obstetrics and Gynecology will determine if you need treatment or observation. Sometimes ovarian cysts are related to endometriosis and more rarely to ovarian cancer. Your physician may order an ultrasound or blood tests to further determine the course of treatment.
